It's also worth noting that, at the time that first wave of Germans immigrated, Argentina was just as wealthy as the US and had all the same advantages re: natural resources etc. It's downright weird that it's failed to thrive ever since then.

What's the old economist joke? The four kinds of economies are developed countries, developing countries, Japan, and Argentina?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago

"There are four types of countries in the world—developed, undeveloped, Japan, and Argentina."

— Simon Kuznets, who won the Nobel prize in economics in 1971

Is Japan in there for thriving despite the resources their little islands can provide?

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

More for their weird economic position of the past 30 years.

us aid + extremely reliable trade partner = profit?

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Developed so hard it's hurting their economy, more like.

That was well after 1971 though. 1971 was during the Japanese economic miracle.

It’s downright weird that it’s failed to thrive ever since then.

When you consider US involvement, it makes more sense.

Your link is about stuff that happened starting in 1976, which was many decades after Argentina was already screwed up. It explains nothing.

[–] Doctor_Satan@lemm.ee -4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's been going on for over a century, and goes beyond Argentina, and even beyond Latin America. It really isn't "weird" that Argentina (and most of Latin America) failed to thrive in the 20th century, when the global north has done so much to prevent it from doing so.

I gave you a starting point. Maybe take a history class or something. I don't know what else to tell you.

Maybe take a history class or something. I don't know what else to tell you.

Quit lashing out with petty personal attacks just because I embarrassed you by pointing out the irrelevancy of your source. That was your own error, not mine.

[–] Doctor_Satan@lemm.ee -4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It wasn't a personal attack. It was actual advice to someone who doesn't seem to understand why Latin America is in the state it's in. Seriously, you should take a class that teaches this stuff. Or pick up a book about it. There's a ton of info out there about the intentional destabilization of Latin America by the global north and their financial interests. Nothing about it is weird once you learn why these resource rich countries aren't as successful as they should be.

Not trying to make you mad. Just trying to explain things.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're so obsessed with "America bad" that you can't even tell the difference between Argentina and other countries, and yet you see fit to try to lecture me about ignorance? Fuck off.

[–] Doctor_Satan@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sowing chaos in neighboring countries and trade partners will negatively affect Argentina (or any country, really). And again, this is all publicly available information, not some obsession with "America bad". You could learn this in books or in classes or even digging around online, but I get the feeling your anger towards anyone bringing it up is kind of a hindrance there.

Anyway, I hope you have a better day.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're being really condescending for somebody who's wrong. Do better.

[–] Doctor_Satan@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You are reading something into my comments that isn't there. I am trying to help you understand why Latin America is in such bad shape, but you're just being combative for no reason. If you let go of the anger for just a moment and read my comments as if you're talking to a human being, I think we could have a constructive dialog. Would you like to do that?

[–] grue@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bullshit. You're trying to push a narrative that has fuck-all to do with the point I had made, which is that Argentina is uniquely screwed up economically in a way the rest of the continent is not. There's a reason the famous economist quote elsewhere in the thread singled it out instead of talking about South America as a whole, after all!

And again, fuck off with the condescending attitude. The notion that you are "helping me understand" anything is nothing but false hubris on your part. You are not fucking entitled to tell me I don't understand American imperialism just because I was talking about a different issue entirely and thus didn't see fit to mention it!

I have understood perfectly the point you think you've been trying to make since before you even commented. You aren't nearly as clever as you think you are, and all you're accomplishing is making an ass of yourself.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

I'm super proud of you.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wasn't Argentina a very rich country until the 1950s? Didn't Peron fuck the place up?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This article suggests the fucking up started in 1930:

Beginning in the 1930s, the Argentine economy deteriorated notably. The single most important factor in this decline has been political instability since 1930 when a military junta took power, ending seven decades of civilian constitutional government. In macroeconomic terms, Argentina was one of the most stable and conservative countries until the Great Depression, after which it turned into one of the most unstable.

As an American I really don't like the writing on that wall
