I think you are misunderstanding the article. This is about choosing what categories are shown as ads on your own website or app rather than what ads you as an end user see

My hosting costs are ~$500 a month. I get about $118 a month from Patreon subs. I also get $200 a month from a single advertiser. Still need to pay ~$200 a month out of pocket.

Ads suck, sure, but shit's expensive for hobbyists.

No I understood fine, I don't care what ads your website or anyone elses chooses to display and I never will because I will always block them no matter what.
