What about a sword? If someone hypothetically tried to stab a wakizashi through the body armor, would it punch through? It's always been my understanding that "bulletproof" armor functioned by dispersing the force of the bullet, but is it designed to do the same for bladed weapons?

Not sure about it but aren't swords like wakizashi, katana and Co not primarily for cutting and slicing? Cutting is not really effective against body armor. Probably an old Zweihänder or longsword would be more effective, since they're made for stabbing. But again, I could be wrong, misremembered something or both.
