- Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling.
- Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible.
- Avoid controversial topics (e.g. politics or societal debates).
- Stay calm: Don’t post angry or to vent or complain. We are a place where everyone can forget about their everyday or not so everyday worries for a moment. Venting, complaining, or posting from a place of anger or resentment doesn't fit the atmosphere we try to foster at all. Feel free to post those on !goodoffmychest@lemmy.world

I took my daughter, mom, and sister out to dinner last week. We still give my folks Xmas gifts, but that's mostly like t-shirts and plants and shit.
I did give my folks a car once because my mom's car was a piece of shit that wasn't road worthy and my dad wouldn't replace it, because my mom runs my kids around a lot and I didn't want them in an unsafe vehicle. Nothing brand new or anything, we'd driven it for years, it was just better than my mom's.
Of course, then my grandma died and left them money and now my mom is in a brand new Tahoe with all the bells and whistles and my dad has a Jaguar he doesn't even keep at the house because it's too nice and do you think they gave it back or paid us a dime? But whatever. I knew who they (my dad specifically) were when I gave it to them. I love them, and I don't really care about the money, just wish they were more thoughtful.
