The change, going into effect this Friday, will be from requiring 600,000 signatures collected in 90 days to 177,000 signatures in 120 days, to trigger a citizen-initiated referendum.

Per Wikipedia, there were 4.4 million people in Alberta as of 2021. If we assume 60% of those are eligible voters, the proportion of the electorate required to trigger the referendum will go from 23% to 7%.

I think of increased susceptibility to populism. I think of the electorate and politics - in Alberta, and federally to placate Albertans and prevent separation - more focused on trivial issues while business as usual (ie, growing inequality) continues

What an oddly strange number.

177,000

Almost as if they have some research that suggests some number of people who would do some certain thing is around that number.
