Because lichess is open source and maintained by volunteers.

it's a for-profit website that tries to do everything it can to get you to subscribe to a premium service (certainly sells your data too) whereas lichess has everything free and open forever

yep my eyes are watering alright. but it must be worth a lot more nowadays i image it would be easily x10 or more.
