for those keeping score at home, this is a facility that is analogous to Argonne National Lab and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and involves sending an x-ray laser into materials to study their properties.

not that i'm personally aware of. in my experience, this technique is really useful for studying atomic lattices essentially. and that can tell you a lot about the biochemical structure of a snail shell or it can tell you something about novel materials for aircraft, say.
