I'm limiting my Google usage to the best of my ability. Monopolies always lead to a huge decrease in quality as shown by the likes of Reddit and so on. I will appreciate the help. I solely walk or use public transport if that matters. And I live in Germany. :)

OSMAnd. I love the downloadable mapsets and screen configurability

Yeah OsmAnd~ has a lot of cool features like path tracking, and I find when I'm out hiking or in a park it has more accurate and available trail information than google does(though it's still not perfect and still more of a supplement). Navigating isnt quite as good as google because of a lack of traffic data, and it's ui is a little complex, but it works fully off line.
