Pretty new to the lemmy thing. Learning the do not and safe zones of the federation.
Lemmygrad is a bit of a rabbit hole from the outside view. Like, holy shit. That place got wicked dark super fast.
Lemmy really seems to be full of landmines. A lit of people here have no filter at all. I guess that's one of the downsides of having many instances with vastly different rules interacting.
The fact is, you have been living in a dream world before, protected from these opinions. And now it feels weird for you to see them, and you think people have no filter. Because that filter was provided by moderators before on other sites.
It's a bit like the blue pull or the red pill in the matrix isn't it. Do you prefer the real world or the fake world.
Lemmygrad started that dark, nothings changed. It's only more noticed now with the half assed Reddit exodus. Problem is many instances are starting to be worse than Reddit ever was, which is petrifying to say.
@random65837 @Wage_slave Oh, Reddit had some truly terrible subs over the years. It feels to me like they only started cleaning up the site pretty recently. There used to be a lot more overlap with 4chan/8chan, and thatβs where many banned subreddits went when booted.
They did, but went from being welcoming to the normal type of toxic users, they went the other way to become politically motivated gatekeepers, called everything that didn't line up with their political narrative "misinformation", and banned any and all the had any type of different opinion. While 100% being OK with people regardless of how toxic they were, as long as anything they said lined up with what they were OK with. Hardly a good situation.
I don't even know how to get on other instances. I'm on lemmy world and that's it. I think. Its confusing.
By being on Lemmy World you are also automatically on any other instance the server federates with. That's the neat part, you don't have to worry too much about it as a user.
And you are automatically excluded from any instance LW doesn't federate to.
This is not true - each instance has their own rules. So if you are on Lemmy.world, you have their rules to follow.
You can talk to everybody in the Lemmy network but you are ruled by the rules of your instance.
It's the same as being on Twitter or Reddit, you have to abide by their rules. The only difference here is that each instance have different rules so you can choose where you feel comfortable here.
Using the default web interface, you can click the rainbow star icon to view a post on the original instance. Or just type the site address into your browser and go there.
I'm on an app, so no joy for me until I figure it out. Prollh could in 15 seconds if I read a faq or something. But, I like to complain too much.
