If you, a representative in a representative democracy, responding to voters wanting you to change your platform to represent their will, instead tell them to shut up and vote for you or else they will get someone who doesn't represent their will but harder, you kind of have to at least show them you're protecting them when they do hold their noses and vote for you.
Like protect reproductive care. Or workers (even a little). or healthcare.
The only difference between the American parties is one of em is holding a knife and glaring, the other smiling with its hand behind its back
