I asked if the word was a noun, and it gave me a "don't know". I asked if the word was an adjective, and also got a "don't know", so I gave up.

Asking about linguistic characteristics of the word is cheating in twenty questions! :) There's a note about this at the end of the "How To" that's linked on the front page.

Also maybe a prompt to this note when you fall foul of this rule would be better than a "I don't know" amoji.

Well in this case the instructions specifically say to avoid those kinds of questions.
