My home brew:

You hit the darkness multiple times, dealing incredible damage to something infinite. Your disrespect to the goddess of darkness has drawn her ire, and you are surrounded by several of her priests, a serpent of shadows, and can feel the icy breath of a shadow dragon on the back of your neck.
