One of the news outlets mention this in particular. Apparently Epstein was trying to legitimize the people he had contact with. He saw inviting Hawking as a way to make his guest list less incriminating.

I think the just was to try to get more legitimate people invited to the party so every invite list wasn't just sex trafficking hit list. They said that he covered this concept in some of his personal communications that were also released.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

9. No link shorteners.
