This is a supported release which still gets (some) security updates for free.
But these are Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM) updates; I guess Canonical realized that the only users who really need security updates for things like
libavcodec
andimagemagick
are those who might want to be able to safely load video or image files found on the internet (eg, enterprise users). Makes sense, right? /sOr you can just update the system to a more recent version? Backporting fixes can't be effortless.
In their defense, it's free for personal use. If they want to milk enterprise clients who can't be bothered updating their systems, who cares
