Can someone explain to me why we have πŸ¦€'s out for this one? It's not like he's a hero or anything, I certainly am not going to miss him, but I thought he was basically just a somewhat more anti corruption, anti-immigration, and in other ways more socially progressive version of Putin who just got pika-pickaxe'd for trying to organize an equally shitty party to most of the other parties, including United Russia and Putin's All-Russian People's Front

e: good discussion below, tl;dr he has earned his crabs

He's a fascist of the neo Nazi variety. Constantly dehumanized Caucasians (of the Caucasus mountains like chechens dagastanis Georgians Armenians etc). He's basically the zelenskiyiyiyiyi of Russia

I can't find anything on the neo-nazi thing in particular (I don't doubt it), but he's certainly fash, no doubt. I'm just suggesting that he's anti-immigration fash standing in opposition to pro-assimilation fash. The only reason anti-immigration seems to be such an anti-state position in Russia is because Putin has correctly read that Russia has a population crisis and is seeking to remedy that by turning foreigners into Russians. Navalny doesn't seem more or less fascist than Putin, he just seems to have a different idea as to what to do with the Other. Which is I guess a reason to bring the πŸ¦€s out, but no more or less so than when Putin kicks it, besides that Putin is a very expedient thorn in international-community-1international-community-2's side.

The one biggest reason I could imagine celebrating Navalny's death is that he is the enemy of our enemy's enemy (Navalny/The West/Putin). Besides that, he's just as fash as a lot of folks who we critically support due to their relation to the West, like Lukashenko and Assad.

Navalny was the West's chosen comprador, in the vanishingly unlikely event a Western coup was pulled off and he was installed to power he would have enthusiastically opened Russia's veins the way Yeltsin did. And if that caused conditions to fall back to the level they were at in the 90s, he would have been responsible for literally millions of premature deaths, as well as completely destroying a crucial actor in the emerging multipolar world. All of this on top of his FAR more vocal hatred for (and calls to exterminate) minorities. Putin is a cold-blooded bureaucrat, he doesn't deal in inflammatory racist rhetoric because it's destabilizing.

nuance and extended discussion notwithstanding, fuck Navalny and RIP BOZO with not an ounce of reservation

Dayum, why you roastin' them like that? I understand why Putin's fash, but why them too?

β€œThe Jews managed to force the world to remember the Holocaust,” Lukashenko declared. β€œThe entire world grovels before them and gives in to them. They are afraid to say a single word out of place.”

β€œThe history of Germany is a copy of the history of Belarus. Germany was raised from ruins thanks to firm authority and not everything connected with that well-known figure Hitler was bad. German order evolved over the centuries and attained its peak under Hitler. This corresponds with our understanding of a presidential republic and the role of a president in it,” Lukashenko said in 1995, perhaps anticipating that he would still be in power more than a quarter of century later.

~~I might actually be flat-out wrong about Assad tho,~~ maybe Erdogan is a better example

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 19 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Nah assad recently decided to do "was it really 6 millions" shit. Luka is just an idiot, i always see this quote from the 90s, but not something weird after, idk why (did he get better or just start masking)

My impression of Assad was that the West, according to him, uses Hitler and the killed Jews as a rationale to crush any foreign policy enemies who they compare to the former and its atrocities....

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Lukashenko is a piece of shit

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Why? To me, at his very worst, he's less worse than Putin....

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 7 points 9 months ago

? Putin is also a piece of shit.

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's a matter of weighing the shit to see which one is greater magnitude, not a matter of if it's shit or not

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Well, what has Lukashenk's done worse than Putin, in terms of policy?

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I couldn't tell ya, I was just articulating what I thought the other person was trying to say

[–] Xx_Aru_xX@hexbear.net 24 points 9 months ago (1 children)

somewhat more anti corruption, anti-immigration, and in other ways more socially progressive

one of these is not like the other

[–] aaro@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

oh obviously, but neither side seems to pro-immigrant, Navalny would just rather see them expelled where Putin would rather see them utilized. There's some degree of nuance on this; I really don't want to come across as a Navalny Stan, but this is also wildly different from Stalin locking up Solzhenitsyn, which was based and cool
