Bummed out they're injecting ads into lemmy :/

[โ€“] codemaster@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Not only ads but tracking and spyware too. I got asked to consent for a shit ton of thrid party cookies seconds after i opened it for the frist time ...

[โ€“] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Perhaps Jerboa is best for now, until Boost comes along

[โ€“] Historical_General@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's probably going to be an ad free mod if you are inclined to go and find it in the near future/medium-term.

[โ€“] codemaster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How a about no spyware third party trackers? I didn't protest against Reddit to lose my privacy to Sync.

It's his app! We can make suggestions, but it's his own choice whether to add ads.

[โ€“] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's proprietary software; what did you expect? That shit will always betray you sooner or later, almost by definition.

I would have liked to think folks on-the-ball enough to ditch Reddit for Lemmy would know better, but nope!

[โ€“] codemaster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The problem is that all third party apps for lemmy look trash

[โ€“] Murvel@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Bro the GDPR consent reads like spyware. And the ads?!

[โ€“] armrods@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

How do you propose the dev gets paid for his work?

[โ€“] rikudou@lemmings.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

By offering a paid version. Not by using spyware.

[โ€“] armrods@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)
  1. LJ is not using spyware
  2. He's offering a paid version right now, subscription based. There's talks about an ad free IAP in the short term future
  3. IMHO I don't see a one time purchase viable if a developer wants to live from just one app (and has to rely on external servers for the app to work)
[โ€“] rikudou@lemmings.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)
  • the ads are quite literally spyware
  • I'd probably be ok with a subscription even though I'm not a fan, but I just can't buy it because it relies on another spyware, Google Play Services, which I don't have on my phone
  • what external servers are needed there?
[โ€“] armrods@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Objectively, ads are not spyware, thats a fact. Objectively, Google is not a spyware either, thats a fact regardless of your opinion. Every instance has their own servers, right now lemmy.world is super slow, earlier they disabled comments to mitigate an attack. Sync relies on your instance being reachable to work.

Well, don't use the word if you don't know what it means. Sure, ads by its nature are not ads. But ads that track you are spyware.

Objectively, Google is not a spyware either, thats a fact regardless of your opinion.

Google Play Services are a spyware, they track so many things about you.

I don't understand what the rest of your comment refers to.

[โ€“] armrods@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

By definition the ads the app uses are not spyware, therefore it is a fact.

Google Play Services by definition is not spyware, again, fact.

Not everything that tracks users is spyware, I'm really hating this place being anti everything that is not FOSS...

[โ€“] rikudou@lemmings.world 1 points 1 year ago

You have some weird definitions of facts. I'm done engaging with you.

[โ€“] Hexarei@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Your instance being reachable isn't anything to do with the sync dev tho. He doesn't pay to keep my instance up.

[โ€“] armrods@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

He relies on the instance up time

[โ€“] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Oh I don't know, maybe the same way folks like Dessalines, Nutomic and Ruud do?

This is Lemmy, after all, not Reddit. It's not as if non-ad-supported business models are thin on the ground around here...
