Beside the code being hosted in many places, is there any of the forks moving forward / worth upgrading to?

Suyu is the most popular + actively developed afaik.

Which is more DMCA proof then Github/Gitlab.

I hope ForgeFed will go into production soon,
then we can synchronize the code in between multiple Forgejo instances in a federated fashion.
