Well ~~the Weimar Republic~~ Germany before the Nazis was also a regressive shithole run by an absolutely terrible monarch. I'm sure the wife had been suffering in Germany for a while

That's the German Empire. The Weimar Republic was an unstable shithole run by a revolving series of coalitions that ended with ze Nazis.

Look at France today to see the process ongoing...Ambiance in most right wing parties (incl. Macron) is like rather Bardella than the Front Populaire.
