The potato plant is toxic. The bit we eat has very low levels that we can eat safely (unless it has turned green) but the leaves and fruit of the potato plant should be entirely avoided.

Indeed, Europeans refused to eat potatoes for a very long time.

getting potatoes onto plates was a massive psy-ops campaign for europe. the French nobility started wearing potato flowers as decorations to encourage people to eat them, and potato fields were heavily guarded to make them appear more valuable.
