The new bill primarily clarifies rules that were a bit vague, but it also has new changes that will substantially improve life-work balance.

  • ESST can be used in at least 15 minute increments and cannot be required to use more than four-hour increments
  • Qualifying workers were expanded to people hired with an expectation of working 80 hours in a year, rather than actual hours worked. Some jobs still exempted
  • ESST usage has expanded to bereavement
  • ESST rules for use are expanded to all paid time off
  • Employers that do not provide ESST must pay the worker for twice the amount they were supposed to get in ESST

Hello everyone! RockSlayer here with another mod update. Recently we had a metapost (found here!) seeking to amend the rules in light of a public disagreement between myself and another mod. Based on feedback from that metapost, we will be implementing a rule banning support for authoritarians. This is one more chance to provide feedback before we codify this rule as written:

Unconditional support of authoritarians will not be tolerated.

Just to be clear ideologically, we are not becoming an anarchist community or using an overly broad definition of authoritarianism. As an anarcho-syndicalist myself, balancing this rule to prevent the exclusion of statist ideologies is of the utmost importance to me; that is why the rule has the requirement of "unconditional support". If you feel like there is a better way to phrase this new rule, please give us your suggestions!

Have you been wanting to unionize at work? Are you concerned about union busting disrupting your organizing efforts? Well then this website will be invaluable to you. CWA is a bottom-up, worker led union. Ever since the PATCO strike made unions afraid of striking, CWA alone has basically kept the idea of striking alive in the US. As an effort to modernize their definition of communication, CWA has created this playbook to prepare you and your coworkers against the insidious and misleading language union busters use to destroy your campaign.

It wasn't until 2020 came around and we regained our voice before things changed in favor of organized labor. Even with companies violently affecting workers with layoffs, now's the time to organize. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now. As a tech worker myself, the knowledge that there wasn't a single union member laid off at Activision Blizzard should be sign enough that unions provide job security.

New Community Rules (lemmy.world)
submitted 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) by rockSlayer@lemmy.world to c/leftism@lemmy.world

Edit: After several days of allowing for people to discuss these rules, there has been no major feedback. In light of this, these rules are now considered the new rules of the community.

Hey all! rockSlayer here with a mod update. Recently, I reached out to the other mods and we came to a consensus to operate our community by our values and democratically select community rules. We also want to use some ideas intended to lead discussion. As long as there are no major objections, these are the things being considered. If there's anything you'd like to see, add it in the comments!

Rules regarding behavior:

  • Absolutely no fascism, right wing extremism, genocide denial, etc.
  • Good faith discussion about ideologies is encouraged, but no sectarianism
  • No brocialism/sexism
  • No ableism
  • No TERFs/ anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric
  • No racism
  • No trolling
  • No insults, dunking, or personal attacks
  • No posting of misinformation, disinformation, or fake news
  • Remember that there is no "right way" to implement leftist theory. Do not accuse historically classified socialist countries of "doing it wrong". This rule does not prevent academic criticism.
  • Try to avoid extremely sensitive topics unless approaching them with appropriate care for intersectionality. Use your best judgement, and be prepared to provide respectable sources when having these discussions. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source in these cases.
  • Mods have final say

Posting Expectations:

  • Comics/memes/shitposts/propaganda are only allowed on weekends
  • Try to avoid liberalism unless discussing electoral politics. Even then, try to focus on tactical agreement towards leftist goals
  • Only one meta post seeking consensus per person per day
  • Posts about a particular ideology are ok, but remember the rules above
  • Post titles must be meaningful and relevant, except on weekends

Ideas for discussion: (admittedly, this section is a lot more loosely structured, and will probably result in meta posts. That's ok)

  • Topic/ideology of the week. This could be done a few ways, like a megathread. It could also affect what ideological posts are allowed for the week. The next week's topic could be voted on in a mod-pinned meta post.
  • Theory Thursdays. On Thursday, post articles/questions/videos/infographics discussing leftist theory. This could be as simple or complex as you want. Alternatively, this could work in conjunction with the topic of the week
  • Create a discord/matrix server

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/13847307

Taken from a Press Release by the group:

LONDON, 1 July 2024—Two young trans activists scaled the NHS England’s London headquarters at 133–135 Waterloo Road in London on Friday to stage a protest and have remained there ever since. The group, now made up of seven young protesters, all 18 or under, has one simple message: Trans Kids Deserve Better: we are not pawns for your politics.

The powerful direct action has been organised by the “Trans Kids Deserve Better” network, which is calling for: access to gender affirming healthcare for trans children and young people, protection from discrimination and disrespect in their daily lives and the right to be heard in all decisions that affect them.

Their protest comes in the wake of the government using emergency powers to ban all access to puberty blockers in the UK, a move that was supported by Labour’s Wes Streeting, likely to be the next Secretary of State for Health. It also comes in the context of a General Election campaign where trans people and trans youth have been used as ‘culture war’ talking points, but not allowed to speak for themselves.

“We are staging this protest to remind politicians and voters that we’re real kids, not just political talking points. We may not have a vote, but it is our lives that are at stake,” said one of the activists staging the protest. “Gender-affirming healthcare is a matter of life and death for us, and we hope that our actions will bring awareness to this fact and encourage others to fight for the healthcare and dignity that we are so shamefully denied.”

Classic Jacobin, several months late on important news /s

Seriously though, while the article primarily focuses on the rule change from last year, the backdrop is necessary to cover what seems to be the first case since the rule was established. It can never be understated how important this NLRB ruling actually is. The laws still need to be updated to reflect modern union busting tactics, but this ruling is still crucial. The Cemex ruling restores part of what's known as "Joy Silk" doctrine, which was a major factor in the huge boom of unions from the 1940's through 1968. The casino is "considering it's options". I hope that means they cement the rule.

I don't think this is actually about needing to pay wages, I believe that the real target is the fast food worker council that was created to make these changes. I think they're going for a tried and true method to gain conservative sympathy, but Republicans are self-segregating away from California and their political influence is waning in the state.

From the article:

The liberal comedian then asked Fetterman whether his shift in various policies had anything to do with his recovery from his 2022 stroke, asking if his near-death experience had given him a "freedom."

"Absolutely," Fetterman responded. "There's a line from the first 'Batman,' Joker's like ‘I’ve been dead once already. It's very liberating.'"

"It's freeing in a way. And I just think after beating all of that, I just really [want to] be able to say the things that I have to really believe in and not be afraid of if there's any kind of blowback."

So basically yes, the stroke made him a Republican. Pathetic and disappointing, but all too predictable.

On mainstream social media platforms, far-right women make extremism relatable by sharing content about organic foods, anti-vaccination rallies, and promoting a feminine lifestyle. They use discussions on dating, marriage, and family to advocate for housewifery against feminism and endorse the Great Replacement conspiracy theory. Eviane Leidig's book delves into the digital world of these far-right women influencers, revealing their roles as propagandists and recruiters for white nationalism. Leidig argues that these women market themselves as authentic to attract followers and spread hateful ideologies, leveraging social media's structure to reach mainstream audiences. Her book provides insights into gender dynamics within the far-right and strategies to counter extremism both online and offline.

From the description:

This 1Dime video is a documentary about the history and evolution of US Democracy, based on the political theory of Sheldon Wolin and his book “Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism” and the Expanded Edition of his book “Politics and Vision: Continuity and Innovation in Western Political Thought.” Wolin’s theories, popularized by the likes of Chris Hedges and Noam Chomsky, are very important for understanding the nature of the American system and what makes it different from other capitalist liberal democracies. My own work (seen in the 1Dime videos and my upcoming book) builds on Wolin’s theories of Managed Democracy and adds a lot to them while also going beyond them, covering certain things Wolin missed.

As Vladimir Putin continues his gritty reboot of the Soviet Union, he's getting a surprising amount of help from the party once led by Reagan. In this new special, "Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse: Moscow Tools," Klepper speaks to foreign affairs experts, possible Russian assets, and the Prime Minister of Russia's neighbor, Estonia, to find out whether Republicans have become the Kremlin's most useful idiots.
