I also thought that this one was, and still is, the best in the franchise. Even the music is better in 2.

Yeah. The other games all felt... off... Even the 10th anniversary of this game didn't have the same magic. I think the sprite work has a lot to do with it.
Though the sequel to the 10th Anniversary ("Aufbruch der Kulturen") was pretty cool because of its three asymmetrical factions.
Unfortunately my German is about as good as my French, so I'm afraid I'll never really get to play it.
Wow, what a blast from the past. I loved playing this game as kid. I'm not sure I understood the strategy or anything, but I did love playing it :P
I've been hearing good things about the new game being developed by the original creator on Settlers 2 &. 3. He's released "pioneers of pagonia" as early access on Steam.
