Hey all,
I am evaluating Unraid for my home server. Currently I am on Ubuntu on bare metal, 2 RAID5 arrays for a total of around 15TBs, main use is personal storage and Plex server (with pass), .arr apps and nothing else. It will be not 24/7 as at the moment I am the only user (upload bandwidth make sharing my plex pointless) and I like to save electricity if not in use (nights), but can be in the future if fiber comes to my home and I open up my plex to friends.
I am lurking around for a while this sub as I find extremely convenient the possibility of Unraid of expanding the storage using different drives. When I upgraded the capacity one of my arrays RAID5 was hell and I would like to have a more flexible way to do it. Also, setting up ubuntu is quite time consuming, and when every new LTS is out, when you upgrade from the old LTS, 100% something will be screwed up, and you have to fix it.
I have tried Unraid using a trial and a spare NAS with a couple of old disks, one as array and one as cache, and everything seems awesome. Really impressed on it: simple, clear, inbuilt containers and VMs, cool. And also a very cool community around it for help.
Although I see that the main concern in this community is the update process of the system. A lot of people are afraid to update due to possible bugs, hiccups, mainteinance, and for some people it really happened: arrays not starting, containers broken, etc etc. So extra maintenance might be needed.
How is the general feeling about Unraid reliability as a system? Is it different from other systems (for example, I never had any issues with upgrading ubuntu within the same LTS, so to update the OS for me is a no brainer task) or the risk is higher?
