Ho Chi Minh, real name Nguyen Tat Thanh (1890-1969), Vietnamese Communist leader and the principal force behind the Vietnamese struggle against French colonial rule.

Ho was born on May 19, 1890, in the village of Kimlien, Annam (central Vietnam), the son of an official who had resigned in protest against French domination of his country. Ho attended school in Hue and then briefly taught at a private school in Phan Thiet.

In 1911 he was employed as a cook on a French steamship liner and thereafter worked in London and Paris. After World War I, using the pseudonym Nguyen Ai Quoc (Nguyen the Patriot), Ho engaged in radical activities and was in the founding group of the French Communist party. He was summoned to Moscow for training and, in late 1924, he was sent to Canton, China, where he organized a revolutionary movement among Vietnamese exiles.

He was forced to leave China when local authorities cracked down on Communist activities, but he returned in 1930 to found the Indochinese Communist party (ICP). He stayed in Hong Kong as representative of the Communist International. In June 1931 Ho was arrested there by British police and remained in prison until his release in 1933.

He then made his way back to the Soviet Union, where he reportedly spent several years recovering from tuberculosis. In 1938 he returned to China and served as an adviser with Chinese Communist armed forces. When Japan occupied Vietnam in 1941, he resumed contact with ICP leaders and helped to found a new Communist-dominated independence movement, popularly known as the Vietminh, that fought the Japanese.

In August 1945, when Japan surrendered, the Vietminh seized power and proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in Hanoi. Ho Chi Minh, now known by his final and best-known pseudonym (which means the “Enlightener”), became president.

The French were unwilling to grant independence to their colonial subjects, and in late 1946 war broke out. For eight years Vietminh guerrillas fought French troops in the mountains and rice paddies of Vietnam, finally defeating them in the decisive Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Ho, however, was deprived of his victory. Subsequent negotiations at Geneva divided the country, with only the North assigned to the Vietminh.

The DRV, with Ho still president, now devoted its efforts to constructing a Communist society in North Vietnam. In the early 1960s, however, conflict resumed in the South, where Communist-led guerrillas mounted an insurgency against the U.S.-supported regime in Saigon.

Ho, now in poor health, was reduced to a largely ceremonial role, while policy was shaped by others. On September 3, 1969, he died in Hanoi of heart failure. In his honor, after the Communist conquest of the South in 1975, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh was not only the founder of Vietnamese communism, he was the very soul of the revolution and of Vietnam's struggle for independence. His personal qualities of simplicity, integrity, and determination were widely admired, not only within Vietnam but elsewhere as well.

Going to a fancyish restaurant tonight to celebrate mother's day and I said id pay for my mom and my partner but boy am i really regretting that as it looks like i'm going to be spending like.. a lot

I really hope this place is good enough to justify the cost and I don't just sit there eating my meal thinking "i could have cooked this 😒😒😒" which seems to be the curse of eating out as a chef

P.s. just made some really good lunch

This is a very online and very dumb question. But which "left" content creator (apart from the obvious one) has had the most harebrained take, and what was that take?

Right now I'm split between Dave Antony's "Leftists should join the NSA/Jimmy Dore and Jerry Springer are the vanguard of the revolution" and November from TFs "ACAB includes nurses, in fact nurses are worse than cops"

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a real desktop computer soon to replace my 5 year old laptop. Any advice on what to look for? Both Intel and Nvidia are on my shitlist for supporting Isn'treal, so is AMD the way to go?

[–] makotech222@hexbear.net 15 points 7 months ago

AMD cpu + nvidia gpu is pretty much optimal for performance. You can use an AMD gpu if you want to go cheaper, though, as long as you aren't playing at 4k you'll be fine.

The amount of people I see saying "Evangelion have me depression" or some similar shit is ridiculous. Like did you just not understand anything that was happening. Did you not see that in every ending, Shinji works to overcome his depression. Bad stuff happens and all the characters are depressed but the show also has a fucking ending where it wants to resolve that. If I was Hidieki Anno I would be so fucking mad

Its so funny arguing about something with a terminal redditor. If you disagree with their argument/points at all they instantly think you're a bot and start screaming 'Hanlon's razor' or 'Occams razor' or 'strawman' or 'appeal to authority'. They can't imagine that someone would come to a different conclusion than them about something.

I picked up cyberpunk on sale because I desperately, desperately need to get out of my own head right now and I'm short on options. Spent, idk, 15 or 20 hours over the last two days trying to fix the crashes? Eventually found this post

https://www.reddit.com/r/truegaming/comments/zp8fww/cyberpunk_2077_is_bad_cyberpunk_because_it_is/

And was like actually, yeah, this is exactly what I've felt the whole time. So I gave up, put in for a refund, and I'm just kind of feeling empty and dejected. I tried to get out of this post-cyberpunk hell for a bit by escaping in to a shallow, bloodless pastiche of the warning we were given 40 years ago. And it was frustrating, miserable, and I have nothing to show for it (well, I did update my BIOS trying to fix the crash. I also nearly bricked my PC.)

Finally got my 3d printer running again, it had been collecting dust for years after moving.

I missed this so much. I remember the last conversation I had about it years ago where someone asked "so what do you make with it?" And I had to stammer and think and answered "uh, mostly hooks and mounts? Stuff to hang things with?" which came off as incredibly boring to them. But, it's SO TRUE and I have made so many homes for so many things in just the past few days.

Weird money-related stuffUh I got like, almost $3400 from the gubmint. I worried that it's in error but I guess it must be related to the Employment Insurance claim, I told em all about the hush money my previous employer tried paying me.

I just used it to pay rent and essential bills (internet, phone) for now, which still leaves like 2/3rds left. It's so weird, idgi.

Since I had to fill EI reports for two two-week periods, I assume the money they dumped on me is two payments' worth? Like $1700 every month maybe? I assume they aren't gonna dump thirty four fuckin hundred bucks in my account each month, absurd.

I wonder if dudes age out of porn categories. Like women are teens until they're 25 then they're milfs. But I've got a suspicion that there are a lot of guys playing stepsons into their 40s.

I love reading through the feed on Nextdoor. It's such a wild little microcosm. MLMs, confused boomers, desperate folks looking for housing or transportation, tons of people hoping to do any odd job for cash, "was that a gunshot?", and at least a hint of fascism in every comment chain.

Someone I know consistently refers to pig transports as "German tourist busses". Yet somehow I'm the racist against Germans?

Curious if this is a case of me having a faulty definition in my head or if people are maliciously misusing a term.

In my mind, a "truther" would be someone who isn't just convinced of an alternative theory on something, but who is aggressively hostile in asserting it and demeaning of anyone who is not on their side.

Like if you think the CIA did JFK, that's not being a truther per se, but if you say shit like "this moron thinks the magic bullet is real" that's some truther shit.

But I'm seeing people use truther for literally just questioning the basic validity of a controversial legal conviction, not even as a matter of "you're a dipshit if you think the court was right" and it feels like just bullying dissenters.

Got a crush on a good friend, asked them out, they gave a "maybe" sort of answer which I generally take as a "no" but they talked a lot about comphet, how they're uncertain how much that is making their feelings unclear, and not knowing how normal it is to have little crushes on friends so I've kinda been waffling about whether to squash my feelings about them or wait a little.

I probably just should, shouldn't I?
