Where to find mobile apps

Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

Hello everyone,

I've seen your community created yesterday, welcome to Lemmy!

As I've seen a few people asking about mobile apps, here is a list with filters: https://www.lemmyapps.com/

At some point, apps might as your for your "instance". You can fill that field with "lemmy.ca", then use your username and password to login. This should work, if not, feel free to comment below.

If you don't like the default lemmy.ca interface, there is also

All of those interfaces allow you to access the same content as the default interface, it's all about preference!

There are a few guides available at !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca

If you have any question, feel free!

Nice to see new communities over here. One thing that I do is in addition to reading up on the communities I'm subscribed to I like to go through /all because its nice to see stuff outside my usual channels. Also some of the Star Trek memes are funny despite not seeing the show

I exclusively browse the all feed personally. I'd rather block things I don't like and be exposed to new things, instead of having to find what I want to see.

Hi, I just joined and I’m wondering how do we reply to comments. Thanks

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hello! Are you on the website or an app? On the website, there is a curved arrow that would open the reply text box:

[–] Crunchyc@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I was on the website when I commented but I switched to an app and it’s much easier. Thanks for replying.!

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 3 points 3 months ago

You are welcome!

I tried downloading an app for it but can't log in with my account? It keeps asking for an instance. Wtf does that mean? I feel so stupid trying to navigate this damn site.

Hey! Welcome to Lemmy. So, gonna try and explain instances for you and everyone else who reads this:

To use an analogy it's kinda like different email servers. If you have a Gmail account, you can send emails to other Gmail users, yahoo users, or any other email server.

You're on lemmy.ca. That means you go there to log in, your account is stored there, everything Lemmy related relies on that server for you.

I'm on sh.itjust.works. I'm on a different server, run by different people with different rules. If, hypothetically, the sh.itjust.works admin goes mad and starts doing crazy things (cough cough spez cough), I can take my account and go sign up somewhere else and still have access to all the same communities.

Lemmy is federated, which means no single person or organisation owns it all. Anyone can run their own instance and hook up to all the other instances.

I hope that helps!

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago

Thank you I think that makes sense!

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Your instance is "lemmy.ca", you can use that to fill that field that then your nickname and password, you should be able to log in.

Let us know how it went.

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I got it logged in and set up using the Thunder app. Thank you so much for the help!

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 3 months ago

Glad to hear!

[–] OddQuality@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Hi! Sorry to ping an older thread, but (with your help) I just got around to finally downloading an app for Lemmy on my phone. So this is partially a test to see how it works (check check), but also I had a question I felt would be more likely to be answered here than out in the larger Fediverse (did I use that right? lol)

.. soo on the lemmy.ca website, I was able to see both the upvotes and downvotes for each post/comment. On the app client I selected (Sync), it just shows the total. (For example: if a comment has 8 upvotes and 2 downvotes, it only shows the "score" of 6) but honestly I found it really interesting to see both numbers. Is there any way I can do that with the app? It doesn't really change anything functionally, but I dunno, I guess I'm just nosey 😅

Anyway, thanks for this post! It was a big help 😊

[–] Shyfer@ttrpg.network 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Hey @OddQuality@lemmy.ca! I also use Sync and looked around my settings and couldn't find it, so let me know if you figured it out. If not, you can also ask on the Sync community on Lemmy if you haven't. Looks like there's two, with the first being more popular, but you can ask on either or both.

And thank you for being so welcoming to this new community! It's awesome seeing someone letting redditors in and showing them around Lemmy.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 3 points 2 months ago

We always say that Lemmy is more welcoming, it was time to walk the talk!

Also very interesting to see newcomers use the platform

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 1 points 3 months ago

Hello!

There should be an option somewhere in the settings! I don't use Sync myself, but I remember people talking about it

[–] urfriendjen@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Thanks again for helping us navigate the transition! Was just curious, what’s the little rainbow thingy mean?

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hello!

That rainbow thing is the Fediverse logo. The fediverse is the network of connected servers, in your case for instance Lemmy.ca is your server.

I see this thread from my server, Reddthat:

If I click on the logo on your comment it gives the comment from your server: https://lemmy.ca/comment/9696531

Both are connected, and allow people to setup their own server compared to Reddit that is a single website.

[–] urfriendjen@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ahh okay! So when you see the logo does that mean that people from different instances are contributing but it’s all connected?

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Actually you see the logo for everyone, even if they are on your instance, it's just there by default. You can identify users from another instance (like me, I'm using Reddthat.com) by the "@Reddthat.com" at the end of my name. It works a bit like email addresses.

It is indeed all connected!

[–] urfriendjen@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Ahh okay cool, thank you. Lots to learn here and I’m loving it 😁

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 3 months ago

You are welcome 😄

[–] Rarepotato@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

How do I add a photo in a comment? I cannot figure it out. Idk if it matters (I’m thinking no) mom using the Avelon app

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Hello again!

I asked on another "sub" about Lemmy apps, and even though I couldn't get an answer from the Avelon dev, I got one from the Mlem dev, @sjmarf@lemmy.ml
