Link previews seem to be broken since upgrade. As you can see this isn't from all instances so is this a federation issue or an upgrade issue?

For what it's worth I get the same experience in Voyager app on Android as well as web-ui.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

I have identified two reasons for broken thumbnails right now:

  1. For some, the source website is simply not allowing our server to download the image (mostly due to server issues on the remote side)
  2. For others, it seems that some types of URLs are breaking thumbnail generation. I think I found the bug here and will try to submit a fix soon.

hi, can that also be related to image proxy, that automatically tries to replace image links, not working?

Awesome news, thanks for taking the time to investigate and, hopefully, resolve.

ApNews seems to be one of the worst offenders.

It's possible what you are seeing is more visible than before due to issue #2433 which is:

When images are broken, a blank space is all that is shown. A fallback image for broken images would make this more apparent.

With the 0.19.4 update I notice it a lot more now and see a lot from apnews.com causing this, on my Subscribed view with news@lemmy.world and world@lemmy.world (and others) this morning I count:

Sites that are fine: www.cnbc.com, www.nbcnews.com, www.bbc.com, www.cbsnews.com, newrepublic.com and a bunch of fediverse instances and other "not mainstream" sites from around the internet. it would appear that whatever has changed in code is interacting badly with certain mainstream news sites and the ability to get a thumbnail - I browsed the lemmy-ui commits and a metric ton of 3rd party dependencies were updated, gave up looking for the cause.

This would most likely be the cause as the majority are from instances that you refer posting links from the sites you mention.

Are you using the default UI ? In my experience it seems to be the one with no to minimal breakage .

[-] hellequin67@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

I've tried with standard WebUI , Voyager android app and next.

This only appears to be happening with my lemm.ee account I have an account on another instance and that's fine. 🤔

New here? That's the state 50% of the time or more, if the site loads at all...

[-] Psych@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

I call bull that isn't true at all, yes there are some breakage but somewhere like 3% - 5% and definetly not frickin 50% and if some new release did do that we tend to get quick fixes fast .

On my Subscribed view on lemm.ee sorted by Hot which very recently upgraded lemmy-ui to 0.19.4 (your lemmy.sdf.org instance has not upgraded yet, just checked), of 14x news items/links which should have thumbnails - 8x of them are broken/missing, just over 50%.

[-] Psych@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's not what they said and the issue is addressed already its not like we just close our eyes and say there is nothing broken and carry on .

[-] hellequin67@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

No, and in last 9 months I've rarely seen weblink preview broken
