Don't even worry, the DoD's budget is now large enough to be self-justifying, like a firestorm that consumes oxygen fast enough to create suction.

"If we stopped spending on military pork now, imagine how many jobs would be lost! Now buy the Army some more tanks it has said it doesn't need!"

[–] match@pawb.social 13 points 1 year ago

Oh? You're cutting the budget? Perhaps I'll sell these surplus tanks to the Taliban again

Dear God. We've created MIC-Zilla

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

I mean, it's not even a recent development.

China IS scary. And the whole reason Russia is getting their ass kicked is BECAUSE of our insane military budget.

Shit take.

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You don't have to be defensive about it, I think it just acknowledges a bit of a public relations tightrope the MIC has to walk. They can't gloat about how we're winning too much (even though they are not just winning, but even doing it with mostly hand-me-downs) or people will start to question whether how much we spend is really necessary. I know why it's necessary, you know why it's necessary, but the average voter doesn't necessarily care.

[–] Cryophilia@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

The average voter sees us spending money on bullets that shoot Russians and they go "Murica fuck yeah!"

Which is pretty much accurate in this case so, cool.

Don't worry they still got China, and black budget funded cartels and domestic terrorists. If it's really necesary, Sahel and Haiti too.

Hard to believe that Iran didn't make the list. Or any Muslim area like Iraq, Syria, Hezbollah, etc.

And when China gets its teeth bashed in trying to invade the Kinmen islands again? Then what?

[–] Hanabie@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Killing China has steep logistical challenges. I'd be happy if all the mafia states went under, but they're too big to take down easily.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

PRC already failed to take the Kinnmen Islands and failed, even though they are more thank 100km away from Taiwan and literally within eyesight of the Chinese coast.

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago

And the UFO narrative suddenly picks up. Look, I'm not saying it's the MIC, but

US military doctrine is (and has been since the 50s) that we should be capable of independently being at war with our 2 largest rivals. That's currently Russia and China, but the way India is advancing their military, they'll take over for Russia soon.

incoming indian-american leaks just like there were chinese-american leaks recently?

[–] dingleberry@discuss.tchncs.de -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

India is not US adversary. It also has no homegrown military industry.

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 year ago

They're a BRICKS nation that launched their first home built aircraft carrier and they've started building another. They've also been demonstrating all summer how much cheaper their ICBMs are than ours.

They don’t need real justifications and never have.

[–] Zorque@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Theyll find some middle-east or southeast Asian country to "free from oppression" if they need to.

Just make FPV drone legal again. Ukrane is blowing up million dollar tanks with 20 dollar drones carrying grenades. Get a good number of operators, and you can have a 21st century fighting force under a budget.

But, no, can't fly FPV drones without a spotter, ID Transponder, government license, and only in particular special parks designed by the FAA.

The primary justification is to have leverage if anybody stops using the dollar as their reserve currency
