is there any launcher out there which has got offline OCR support in recents like the Pixel Launcher? Not talking about the Google lens implementation in recents menu here. I uninstalled the Google App from my phone using SD Maid. The custom rom I use(EvolutionX) does have launcher3 as its default(basically identical to Pixel launcher in every aspect, just without that Select/OCR in recents menu, and its got a bit more customisability since it’s open source), but being able to select images/text right from the recents menu without having to connect to the internet was something that I found to be a really powerful tool. miss having it handy whenever I needed it…

Just to clarify, on pixel phones, when you go to the recents menu, you are able to select text from all the app previews. If you have a photo with text open in an app and go to the recents menu, you can select and copy the text from that preview. Same goes if you use an app that doesn't allow selecting and copying text. If you go to the recents menu, you will be able to select that text ;-)

yep. in A13, it's not just text either. if a thumbnail, or some other image is present you can even copy that to the clipboard, no need to take a screenshot and crop it later. it's just a really convenient feature that I wish to be able to use it in its fullest once again. Pixel Launcher Extended is being depreciated soon, not to mention the odd battery drain issue with its latest release...

That isn't a launcher specific functionality. It's the recent menu on Pixel phones and I guess it should be a part of Android 13, but it might be locked to Pixel phones right now. I'm using a custom launcher on my Pixel 7 Pro and I still have access to the OCR functionality in the recents menu.

I'm also using a custom launcher and a Pixel 7a, and have always had the ability to copy the text from app previews in recents. I only learned the other day that this was Pixel exclusive, I hadn't heard it was supposed to be launcher exclusive.

if it was locked to pixels specifically, devs would've been able to implement it into mods like Pixelify which ports over all Pixel exclusive features, but i don't really know...

I would guess it should be possible. Unfortunately I'm not really active in the modding community these days, so I cannot really recommend anything. It's quite annoying with these Pixel locked features :-\

OCR = optical character recognition??

If so, then I only know of a good app, dunno what you mean with "recents" and pixel launcher stuff exactly.

recents menu: overview, that pops up when you swipe up from the home bar

[–] Azzu@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah idk for me that just opens my app drawer :D

He means the recent apps or app overview feature. If you drag up from bottom and hold for a few seconds you get a thumbnail view with all the recent apps opened on your phone. In that view, you can select text seen inside the app.

[–] Azzu@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Guess it's something Google specific, never seen that.

I don't know about launchers but this offline OCR works really well:

This is súper useful, if you find anything ley us know please.

Don't quote me on this but I don't think this is possible/easy to do without root. Last I heard the recents screen is handled by the original launcher. There might be other ways though.
