Collapse

This is the place for discussing the potential collapse of modern civilization and the environment.

Collapse, in this context, refers to the significant loss of an established level or complexity towards a much simpler state. It can occur differently within many areas, orderly or chaotically, and be willing or unwilling. It does not necessarily imply human extinction or a singular, global event. Although, the longer the duration, the more it resembles a ‘decline’ instead of collapse.

"Space is an unsustainable environemnt" - what a weird headline for something that basically says "we need to do better about taking care of trash in orbit of Earth".

I mean, based on the headline, you'd think they're making a wildly bold claim.

The headline could be rephrased as "earth dwellers find a new place to eat, quickly begin shitting there too"

Indeed, this is mostly about LEO area denial by recursive fragmentation of space junk. The broader question is how long we will retain significant launch capacity to maintain at least borderline geosensing and telecommunications infrastructure in space when net energy begins to fall steeply. Perhaps we shouldn't take availability of things like Starlink for granted.
