They'll offer 7 years, and a new phone if you use it for the duration. Then after two years they'll go "nah, never mind" and drop it altogether.
Realistically the best scenario will be 5 OS update and 7 security maintainance. (5 + 2)
That would basically match Apple for the realistic life of a phone. That being said, Apple did just release a security update for the 5s.
5 years of software update I think it's really fine, the phone battery will be down at that time and you'll need to replace it, maybe trading it for another phone will be much better.
Can't argue with that, although some people prefer to change the battery instead, which is also valid.
Someone should create himself a reminder in 7 years to check if Google good this promise and still provides major OS updates for this Pixel.
Apple delivered 5 major iOS updates to the iPhone X + the whole iOS 16 lifecycle with probably some additional security updates in the next 1-2 years. Let’s see how many updates the new iPhone 15 (Pro) models will get. I expect not less.
iPhone X user here, very happy. I’m considering replacing it this year, but I can continue using it with no problem. Can’t play games smoothly tho. It would melt . But phones should last longer and have part replacements , the industry needs to change.
One big reason for my replacement last year was th camera. The X camera was nice back then… but now? No. Too much capabilities missing.
And of course 5G is quite ok. I like the dynamic island, 120 Hz screen, and some other features.
My old X ist still lying on the desk and works. But I retired it after 5 solid years of work.
I'm happy with 5, have not kept a phone for that long and I don't really sell them at the end.
Using a 5 as well and I already fear ever replacing it - it's just the perfect size :(
Welp, we'll see if it is actually promised and then if they actually follow through.
Knowing Google, they will most likely kill the Pixel program in that time frame.
That's what they're banking on
7 years of updates.
It will be 4-5 years of major Android upgrades, and then Feature drops (android/pixel) and security patches, I think.
It depends on the pre order bonus and I might actually get it.
I just also really hope the battery rumors are true and it actually does have 4500mAh
How long does GrapheneOS get updated?
It still supports the pixel 4, which was released 4 years ago. Google stopped supporting it a year ago.
If google does maintain their stuff properly for 8 years, that means grapheneOS will also easily do 8 years, maybe even more.
graphine usually gets updated for as long as Google is still releasing patches, now of course graphine is a FOSS Project so zero guarantees of any kind
For as long as the phone is getting security updates from Google.
My phone came with a11 and is now on 13. I would have loved to stay on 11. Every update seems to take more things away than add any features I would actually use. An example is a12 making it so certain links can only be opened by default by "trusted" apps, Youtube for one. I've found workarounds but it's still annoying.
Good. They should have done this ever since they started moving to their own Tensor chips. Once you control the processor and the firmware, you're not at the mercy of other companies removing support
My Huawei P30Pro NE only received 1 Update and im thinking the 8Pro could be the final replacement. Im still waiting for Battery tests.
My work phone is a IPhone13pro and battery is crazy good there. I hope Pixel can get closer to Apple.
I guess they have then 7 years time to fix battery life or make it worse every year.
This is very great to reduce my carbon footprint :-)
Cool, but with batteries only lasting 2 to 2.5 years why not offer infinite OS updates
What are the odds this gets back ported to the Pixel 6 and 7?
