Title, basically. Back on Reddit, there was a way to add a user as a friend. It made it easer to identify people (Apollo would highlight friends differently), as well as to see what they’re up to across all communities. There was even a feed for all posts by all friends, which was really useful.

I follow my favorite Lemmy users on Mastodon -- since they're both on activitypub, you can use the one from the other. I like it much better because that's kinda Mastodon's whole jam, following users. Here's what it looks like from Mastodon looking at my account

There any good apps for mastodon that are similar to Memmy?

I know Lemmy has "made it" when I see Sounders FC content.

Are there MLS communities?

Yeah. I'm part of !mls@lemmy.ml and !mls@lemmy.world -- the one on the world tld seems to be the more active of the two.

And !soundersfc@lemmy.world isn't even the most obscure Seattle soccer community on here -- we also have !reign_fc@lemmy.world for our !nwsl@lemmy.world side, and !ballard_fc@lemmy.world for our USL2 side.

Reddit didn't always have that, and Lemmy I think is in many ways meant to resemble Reddit before the introduction of user-focused features. Kbin has the option though.

Some social media focus on people, some on subjects.

One type tends to create "influencers" and circle jerking opinion bubbles, the other forces you to interact with different opinions around subjects you like.

I hope Lemmy stays on the second type.

Besides, with the volatility of instances, and user logins not being universal across instances, Lemmy also makes it harder to do that, and as a bonus devalues karma hoarding.

Yes, use a Mastodon instance. You will find the user.
