While we're at it, give Kurdistan back to the Kurds as well

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They won't even return the occupied part of Cyprus. Honestly I'm surprised that Russia still didn't try to use that one for propaganda, since the Turkish claims are very similar to Russian ones and it's a wedge between two NATO members.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Turkey is considering joining BRICS. Putin has more to lose than he has to gain from provoking one of the more friendly NATO members.

Turkey drives wedges between itself and other NATO members on its own anyways. I don't think Russia pulling on that thread would do anything other than make Turkey less friendly to them.

It could even have the opposite effect and unify NATO a bit because who in the West gives Russia any credibility other than the far right?

And hand Trump over to the Kurds so they can show him their appreciation for his betrayal when he was President.

Haven't they done a national referendum over this

[–] Zerlyna@lemmy.world 51 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That’s the first good thing that has come out of his mouth since I can remember.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Hasn't he supported Ukraine through this whole endeavor?

[–] meant2live218@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I believe Erdogan (and Turkey in general) were big players in getting the wheat trade deal settled, as well as the prisoner exchange, though I could be misremembering. It's just a weird situation of Erdogan having a history of centralizing power, but also making moves to be more relevant on the global stage.

I thought Turkey had been supplying Ukraine weapons. Was it a one time only thing?

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

He seemed to be playing both sides.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Thank you, you were at least more descriptive than the person I replied to.

Even Trump’s favorite dictators no longer love him. What a loser.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 days ago

That's the north Korean guy tho?

[–] frezik@midwest.social 41 points 5 days ago

Russian checks must be bouncing.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 46 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Was Trump's performance so bad that it accidently set Erdogan straight? What next, Putin straight up dies from a heart attack over shock? Kim Jung Un, so disgusted in his bff Trump ends up giving up the dictatorship and surrenders?

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 27 points 5 days ago

Erdogan is like a child of divorced parents, always playing both sides but also manipulating both on any sign of weakness.

The Krim was a battleground between the ottoman empire and Russia multiple times over, most known as the Crimean war, but in Napoleonic times too.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 37 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Pick a side already, strongboy.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 31 points 5 days ago (1 children)

His entire strategy on the global stage is to play both sides. The only difference between him and India is that India is not part of NATO.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yes. I'm asking him to stop

[–] Llewellyn@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

But it would be unwise for him to do so. Now, it would be moral, but that's another story.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You think he's ruling wisely?

[–] Llewellyn@lemm.ee 2 points 4 days ago

But only with his own wellbeing in mind

[–] N0body@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

When you think about it, the primary reason for taking Crimea was because Russia needed a port to maintain its Black Sea Fleet. Now that the Moskva and most of that fleet have been upgraded to submarines in said Black Sea, do they still even need the port?

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Once the straits are opened to all traffic, they'd just bring in more ships and ~~need~~ want it again.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Cool. Now do Northern Cyprus. What do you mean "no"?

[–] SassyRamen@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

There is no Cyprus in Ba Sing Se.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 0 points 5 days ago

Someone's a little guy in that photo.
