Maybe don't drink shit whiskey and try a good bourbon instead?

[–] dance_ninja@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And the amazing thing is you don't need to pay a premium for the good stuff compared to Scotch.

[–] Soulg@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Any suggestions? I tend to shy away because of how expensive they can be.

Plenty of good cheap bourbon out there:

Cheapest, but very drinkable:

  • Evan Williams
  • Very Old Barton

A little more expensive, but amazing:

  • Buffalo Trace
  • Four Roses
  • Basil Hayden
  • 1792

No problem! Enjoy your alcoholic adventure!

What @Skanky@lemmy.world recommended is a good starter collection. Figure out your pallette preferences. Basically avoid the big name labels like Makers (same rule as for beer). If you have a Costco membership, you can get a good price.

About $40-$100 is the sweet spot.

  • Woodford reserve
  • high West
  • old Forester 1870, 1910, 1920
  • angels envy

Also, an ice cube or splash of water opens up the bourbon and improves the flavor. There's nothing uncouth about having your alcohol the way it tastes best.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed this was a 2 week old post.

"Ugh... This fresh alcohol tastes like shit. You know what would make it better? If it tasted like old wood."

This also depends on life cuz sometimes... Cheap is fine.

Evan Williams is good and smooth, not stupidly overpriced either.

Not a huge, huge bourbon fan, but Buffalo Trace used to be a solid "budget" option during my trendy cocktail phase. Perfectly passable, even enjoyable, straight.

Wood tastes good tho. People also like smoked food

[–] gentooer@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago

Oak contains vanillins and wood sugars. French oak tends to taste a little bit more spiced and American oak tends to be a bit more sweet.

When making my apple mead, I always add French oak while maturing, and it makes a huge difference in taste. I add it mostly for the tannins though (the bitter part of tea), which gives it more "chew" (like the difference between white and red wine).

From someone where poor alcoholics drink Listerine to get drunk despite how hard it is on their body, it is nothing like bourbon and a scourge on humanity. My city took it off of user shelves and behind the counter at stores and pharmacies until lobbying got their way.

Oh and btw it only works short term and doesn't even cover half the causes of bad breath.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

? I really like bourbon.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

I would try that

Its one of those things that's bizarre enough to be entertaining

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It reminds me of that bacon-flavored soda that was popular for a couple weeks until everybody tried it and was like "Yep, that's what drinking bacon is like" and never bought a second bottle.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Was that the Jones Soda one? Honestly that's not even the weirdest flavor they have, that's just kind of what they do.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

This is pretty close to the way that cocktails were invented, so 🤷🏽‍♂️

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've always preferred straight alcohol. I never get why so many people are unable to drink it.

Like... It's strong. That's the point. Yet still, one sip of your drink and they have to make a big thing out of it. It's not a blended sugar drink, lol. It's like an espresso... Brace yourself for flavor town and take a SIP.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

If it is an unfamiliar sensation, then people will often take a larger sip than they should, and the strong alcohol flavor and feel is jarring. Some people enjoy the flavor, but need to blend it with something else to pick up on subtle notes.

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemy.lol 5 points 1 month ago

I don't know wtf you're drinking. Bourbon ain't made in your buddies backyard over the course of a week or two.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

I think I would unironically like this. I mean Bourbon is OK, but its not the mash up of chicken and burning promised above.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I wonder how extra crispy would taste.
