Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - Release Date 09/26/2024 This is how I know GOTY is bullshit. Game hasn't even released and its nominated for GOTY.

[–] Kelly@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

This is just Polygon's guess of what they think will be nominated - pure crystal ball gazing.

That said on previous years there has been a few weeks between ballots being due and the cut off for a games release date:

Ballots were sent out to outlets on Oct. 29, due back on Nov. 6, [...]. Outlets also had until Nov. 13 to send in updated versions of those ballots, if changes were necessary. [...] To be eligible, the game must be released before Nov. 20 [...]

This list actually put AC Shadows, I'm dying. Way to out yourselves, Polygon.

Out themselves with regards to what? For a game to win GOTY at the Keighleys, the best way to stand a chance is to be a game that the most reviewers played, and they're all going to cover the next Assassin's Creed.

What are people's thoughts on Wukong? I ended up getting it since the reviews seemed very good and unfortunately I dont think it is a very good game. Looks great, flashy first few chapters, but SUPER klunky. Camera makes elden ring's seem good, terrain navigation is atrocious, and the story is so disjointed that I quickly lost interest in trying to track it (though as a fromsoft fan I shouldnt really be able to complain about story stuff). I have it at about a 6/10.

I haven't played it simply because of all of the right wing culture war noise surrounding it. No hate to anyone legitimately enjoying it, more power to you, but if there is discussion about game mechanics or lore or technical achievements the game brings, it's overwhelmingly obscured by Gamers™ lauding its lack of diversity.

It's the Wish.com version of Dark Souls

What input did you play on? The camera was fine for me on mouse and keyboard, which is funny because From games are usually pretty bad on m&k. Terrain navigation was at its worst when invisible walls were plentiful, but overall, I didn't struggle with navigation. Also, as someone who is mildly familiar with JTTW, the story was a bit confusing but followable.

The rules and the preferences of the judges or what has not won before makes Game of the Year look kinda like shit. Like indie games and fps games without narrative have no chance?

[–] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 17 points 3 days ago (2 children)

the public vote only counts for 10% of the final vote

This is bullshit. This year has proven better than any other that there is a wide discrepancy between what gamers vs "critics" think is good.

[–] imecth@fedia.io 9 points 3 days ago

That 10% is only there so that you can participate and feel involved; awards are mostly money schemes and industry people patting each other on the back.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

It's a popularity contest in either case, so the winners will hardly change.

[–] HackerJoe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I vote for Concord. I didn't buy it, I didn't play it. But seeing Sony fail so spectacularly was massively entertaining. GOTY material indeed.

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why isn't Echoes of Wisdom in the "upcoming" category? It doesn't release until the end of the month.

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 20 points 3 days ago

Because game awards are a marketing gimmick

To be fair, it's probably the only game I'm going to buy at launch this year.

[–] inlandempire@jlai.lu 8 points 3 days ago

If you were to judge based on this list, this would be a poor year for video games

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

UPCOMING

Assassin's Creed Shadows

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Go home Polygon, you're drunk.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And they didn't even list KC:D2

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

That last game didn't break 80 on metacritic. This second one would be quite the unlikely game of the year contender.

EDIT: Also just remembered that game doesn't come out until 2025.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The first one has a huge following, metacritic is terrible for some games. Look at the steam reviews.

And damn you're right, I guess they pushed it back. I thought it was coming out this year.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Metacritic and OpenCritic scores are the best way to gauge whether or not they'll win GOTY at "The Game Awards" though, since the same people who awarded those scores are largely responsible for nominating and selecting winners at that show. So it's possible that as bugs were ironed out in patches and over the subsequent years these outlets all found their "Kingdom Come: Deliverance guy" who came to the game late that perhaps this new one does better, but it would have to do a lot better to be a real contender.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

That's true, I forget that goty stuff is based off the critics vs the players.

Is there something like this, but only for indies?

[–] callouscomic@lemm.ee 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Really? Astrobot? Bullshit. Sony probably paid for that. Also a yet to be released Nintendo game, and the 4 billionth slight variation on the most overrated final fantasy of all time. Whoopdeedoo.

[–] gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I've heard from shit tons of sources that Astro Bot is straight-out good, yes

Lol, downvoted for sharing genuine opinions people I personally know have, as well as sources who are super willing to call out corporate garbage for what it is loving it, like Stephanie Sterling

[–] HackerJoe@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago

Other than being a nostalgia-reference filled and well put together time waster it's not that special. It's very inoffensive and it runs well. Maybe that is enough for most people to indulge and enjoy.

I don't think it GOTY material but I don't hate it. It's certainly fun and has tons of cute details.

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago
