Russia is set to increase its spending on defence by 25% in 2025, the highest since the cold war, as Vladimir Putin vows to continue his war efforts in Ukraine and further escalate his standoff with the west.

The latest planned increase in spending will take Russia’s defence budget to a record 13.5tn rubles (£109bn) in 2025, according to draft budget documents published on Monday on the parliament’s website. That is about 3tn rubles more than was set aside for defence this year, which was the previous record.

Taken together, spending on defence and security will account for about 40% of Russia’s total government spending – or 41.5tn rubles in 2025.

The 2025 budget suggests that Putin has embraced what economists have dubbed “military Keynesianism”, marked by a significant rise in military spending, which has fuelled the war in Ukraine, spurred a consumer spending boom and driven up inflation.

40% of national expenditure on defence and security is astounding. I'd read previously that the massive defence spending was reshaping the Russian economy, but I had no perception it was that high.

That sounds like the sort of spending you'd pursue if you were heading toward total war, not merely entrenched in a single 'special military operation'. I wonder if it indicates that those who suggest that this is just the opening stage of what will end up being a much larger war involving the attempted conquest of other nations might be right.

It could be a sign they're gearing for all out war economy in preparation of a massive offensive on multiple fronts....

Or it could be a sign their already not great corruption-riddled military absolutely screwed the pooch in terms of (not) maintaining things and pocketing the money, and now to compensate for what needs replaced as well as current losses, a large portion of their economy has to be diverted in order to keep from being completely demolished on the front lines.

In no way does that mean "Russia is facing imminent defeat", just that they have to focus on making guns and ammo to replace what's being lost and can't focus on other things right now.

Lol. You have GOT to be talking about the USA here, right? Talk about corruption-riddled military. The USA spends more on military then the next 11 countries combined and it can't produce artillery shells at the same rate as Russia can under embargo.

Look at the cost of the modern fighter jet program and it's barely functioning. Look at the cost PER MISSILE of the systems they sold to Ukraine and Israel. The USA is the quintessential example of corrupt military industry in the world.

They spent a fifth of their sovereign wealth fund covering their budget deficit last year, I'm not sure that Russia has the capacity to scale things up

How the hell do you think Russia is gearing up for invading other nations when the USA out spends it by an order of magnitude and already has 600+ military bases on foreign soil.

Y'all are really delusional. Russia doesn't have any ability to launch another invasion and the CIA has continuously assessed that Russia has neither the means nor the intention to take and hold Ukraine.
