You've read it right, flairs are finally here.
No longer will you have to endure cringe and based opinions alike, in a vast and boring sea of flairlessness. No longer will you have to actually read someone's take, to be able to judge them. I bring you... THE FUNNI COLOURS.

@Atalocke@lemmy.basedcount.com and I have been hard at work on this feature for the last couple months and we're so glad to finally see it live. There is, however, an asterisk.

For the time being, only users from our instance (lemmy.basedcount.com) can see and set user flairs, as this feature doesn't propagate through federation. As such, users from other instances (less than half of the !pcm@lemmy.basedcount.com userbase) won't notice any changes.
My next project will be bringing support for user flairs to other instances through a browser extension, but that'll probably take me some time.

Of course, if you want the full PCM experience™️ you can always open an account here (wink wink).

In the meantime, enjoy your funni colours, pcm. Stay based and flair the fuck up.

Hope lemmy will include community Flairs in general soon

[–] Nerd02@lemmy.basedcount.com 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah that's what I hope as well.

The Lemmy devs have proposed us to include this in the Lemmy source code and make it a widely available features but honestly it's such a MASSIVE undertaking for just the two of us. Idk if and when we'll be able to do that.

Hm, i mean lemmy is open development, if you can get a framework maybe others start contributing as well

Yep, hoping to flair up on jerboa soon (I really only use Lemmy on mobile).

Wait you're already able to move your existing account over to another instance now? LETSGOOO

[–] Nerd02@lemmy.basedcount.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Eh not really, I guess I didn't word that correctly. There are tools to do that but it's not natively supported.

Let me change the OP, now that I look at it it's actually very confusing.

[–] PrivateNoob@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ahh I see so you've meant the community subscriptions actually, right? I mean for some people it can count as a migration, so it's understandable.

[–] Nerd02@lemmy.basedcount.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah something like that. Migrating comments and posts would be a pain in the ass and would require admin cooperation.

It'd be a nice feature, but I think the devs have already said it's not a priority for them to build this.

[–] PrivateNoob@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah and checking out the PR comments, it seems it really would be a huge pain in the ass for them to figure this out.

Thank you! Now it's easier than ever to Find My People and create an echo chamber amongst ourselves!

I can finally be my based self again, no need to cover behind a mask of normie takes and ideologies

[–] gsa5556@lemmy.basedcount.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Another option may be a post where users on other instances may be able to flair up with a command. For example, !flairup libleft

This should theoretically work with all ActivityPub instances

[–] Nerd02@lemmy.basedcount.com 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah but the problem would be that they wouldn't be able to view those flairs. The only reason you (and other lemmy.basedcount.com users) can see them is because our instance is using a modified version of the frontend built by yours truly.

The regular frontend that everyone else runs has no idea of what a "flair" is.

So at that point it's probably easier to put both the flair picker and the code to "view" everyone's flairs in a single browser extension, that people who want to see flairs can download.
