I feel like I've read that as a description for Purgatory before. A place of nothingness, just an endless blank expanse where the souls reflect on their guilts until they fully comprehend the wrong, and move on to a better place.

We have that already, it's called solitary confinement. It just ends up making people either break down or go mad.
