I need to configure a basic home server that can run Nextcloud and GoToSocial. I would like to use a libre RISC-V single board computer. What are good bang-for-the-buck alternatives as of December 2024?

I've been using a Milk-V Mars and been pretty happy with it.

What distro(s) have you run on it?

Ubuntu and Debian so far. The internal GPU doesn't work with them, but far a purely headless server this isn't an issue for me.

That one looks promising. Thanks!

I’m unqualified to give any advice here, I can only point to a possible starting point: the Banana Pi StarFive VisionFive JH7100 RISC-V SBC

Hopefully someone actually knowledgeable will come in with thoughts on this or other SBCs.

Interesting. Thanks!

I’m unqualified to give any advice here […]

What makes you think that?

I’ve never used a RISC-V chip in my life, never mind this specific SBC.

Imo, one's level of physical experience with something doesn't, on its own, necessarily determine one's qualifications. I don't really believe that there are necessary specific qualifications that determines if someone is qualified or unqualified to state an accurate claim or form a sound argument. I believe that such mindsets risk the creation of appeals to authority. Imo, atomic claims are either correct or incorrect. What's important is how they are stated — was it stated factually? was it explicitly prefaced as an anecdote? were its risks outlined? I think that you stating that your perceived inexperience up front is a good way to express the 3rd possibility, and I appreciate your transparency, but I don't think that makes you unqualified to say what you said.

The point I was making was that my pointing out the existence of X shouldn’t be seen as an well-informed endorsement for X.

Has anyone tried the BeagleV-Ahead?
