Surprisingly, this magic-dominant world is microbe-aware as we see the lunch lady wearing a mask. Screenshot

Your comment made me curious about this. I did some quick searching and found that face masks as a way to prevent disease transmission was first introduced in 1897 (at least in the West). Honestly, that is later than I would have thought. Microorganisms were first directly observed in the late 1600's, so it took quite some time to connect the dots on that one.

As an aside, as somebody that has done a ton of microscopy in my career, the Leeuwenhoek Microscope is an absolute feat of engineering for its day. Just some phenomenal skill to be able to create lenses that small and high quality.

I liked Alicia's move with cutting her hair as well and how it is used to visually show the brainwashing power struggle going on behind the scenes. If they had been a bit more subtle about it without pointing it out explicitly I would have liked it even more.

When that scene was unfolding, I was wondering where all the school staff were that were just letting things play out. I still enjoyed the whole sequence, but when I was in school, if there was a confrontation in the cafeteria, somebody was there pretty quick to try to break things up.

That's a LN/Manga/Anime problem in general. School staff is more elusive than a store clerk at a hardware store. (And all the power lies with the student council)

After the lackluster episode last week, we finally get another pretty good episode. It's got all the things we want! Cool Villainess moments! Liz's followers being big meanies! Prince Duke being creepy! Mel doting on Ali-Ali! Oh, and plot. That's right, the plot actually moves a few steps.

We get reminded that Laval has been doing... SOMETHING in the background to antagonize the kingdom. Seriously, for some kind of maleficent nation their schemes are as deep as TPing a house. And of course it all comes back to Roana. It's like all of the world's problems have to end up there or something.

Then we see Liz use both her light and dark side powers to manipulate Gill and Ms. Freckles, respectively. Ms. Freckles decides to cut some hair without a license, which is a big no-no. So Alicia steps in and sets the new fashion trend.

I found this interesting because Alicia's really cool Villainess moment there actually served to gain her supporters and loosen Liz's stranglehold on the students. We also see Duke able to pull Gill out of the brainwashing. It really makes me wonder what the special conditions for Liz's spell actually are.

Speaking of Liz's spell, we see Mel at the end discovering just what ability Liz has been using this entire time!

And then of course the episode ends. I'm really looking forward to the reveal next week!

I am really curious about what Liz is doing. If her influence on others is unconscious, then she almost becomes a bit of a tragic figure. However, if she is knowingly brainwashing people like this, then she deserves all the hate that it is so much fun to direct her way.

[–] Mercuri@ani.social 4 points 1 week ago

Right? Whether her brainwashing is intentional or not has been a question from the start. Sounds like we might finally get some answers.

Oh, I just realized something. Liz is the golden rose. Duke is the blue rose. I suspect Alicia is the black rose. Since both Duke and Alicia seem capable of breaking Liz's hold on people, I bet that has something to do with it.

Great episode this week. Alicia was a total boss, even telling some other girl to be a boss just like her. Gill got to show off his hard work from his studies. Duke got it through his head that he can't put Alicia in a cage or she isn't Alicia any longer. Even Mel got a moment at the end where she seems to discover something in those old books.

I am glad that there are 13 episodes for this show because I would have no idea how they could wrap all this up with just one more.
