For commander I use EDHrec and Scryfall. I also do searches of builds among Moxfield's decks to see what other people are doing with it.

Commander? I see a new legend I want to build around. Example: I've never done a group hug deck. But I may build Sergeant John Benton because his art screams "not fantasy in any way" and that's funny to me.
Modern? I see an interesting combo piece I want to build around.
Then I just scryfall search for the kinds of effects that would pair well with it.
A shortage of deck ideas has never been a problem for me. The limiting factors are (a) the difficulty of obtaining the cards and (b) eventually finding out that the decks I make aren't viable. And I guess (c), finding enough time to play them.
I've gotten into the habit of reading through the "Traditional Ranked Standard Decklists" that get posted weekly at https://magic.gg/decklists , looking for any archetypes I haven't seen before, or any new tech in familiar archetypes.
If there's a draft archetype I enjoy, sometimes I try to turn it into a constructed deck. That works fine for casual play, but usually doesn't yield anything competitive.
Oh wow ty I didn't realize they posted those, that's a really good resource
I know its bordering on necroposting , but i would love to actually go out with a bunch of cards to my LGS and brainstorm there with people at the table
