What is the ownership structure, is it fully Chinese controlled, and would Unkel Sam be able to trace posts on there back to US users?

Best to assume anything you do on the internet is visible to the feds if they want to look for it.

That said, I think its safe to assume they have better visibility into services running on US infrastructure. Rednote currently uses entirely China based servers, so probably it's safer from US government snooping. Doesn't mean they can't can't connect your account to your real identity through other means, though.

They're gonna comply with US law enforcement. Use TOR and a foreign/untraceable phone number if you're worried about being tracked.

Do you have a source on them saying they'll comply with US law enforcement, or is that just speculation?

[–] thetaT@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

it's reasonable speculation. they won't lose out on the entire U.S. market just to protect the data of one or two users.

idk, after watching ByteDance put lots of resources into trying to appease the great satan and still have TikTok banned, I don't see why XHS would play ball with the US. They have no US footprint, so can't be impelled to snitch.

A good part of their investors are foreign capital. GGV Capital is California-based venture capital fund focused on East Asian tech investment. HongShan is Sequoia subsidiary based in Hong Kong. DST Global is owned by Moscow-based Israeli tech entrepreneur, who just bought over an undetermined amount of their shares through secondary sales six months ago.

The exact amount of shares held by which investors is not known, but if they want to keep their investors, they will have to comply with US laws.

Having said that, I don’t think anything will happen from the US side. TikTok ban has more to do with the US tech companies wanting a slice of pie from the growing Chinese market, and lifting TikTok ban is going to be the bargaining chip to let them in. If the negotiation goes the way I think they are going, Trump gets to declare a PR win from TikTok fans, China probably lets in US tech investment to boost their economy.

Speculation. But there's no reason to suspect otherwise. They're not some rebel information outpost, they're a corporation who are going to follow the laws required of them to do business.

They're not beholden to US laws and I can't imagine any Chinese laws requiring them to snitch to the great satan

If they wanna stay on the Play and Apple store they're going to comply with US law enforcement.

They’re gonna do what’s best for the Chinese people. Running afoul of the US govt does not benefit Chinese people. Why would they do it? There is a fair amount of risk involved and very little reward.

Use TOR and a foreign/untraceable phone number

how does one go about obtaining such a phone #

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 1 points 4 months ago

Probably whatever the latest silk road iteration is there's a number of marketplaces on TOR. Also, there's many, many non-darkweb sites out there dedicated to buying and selling social media accounts. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before people start selling phone verified XHS accounts or something.

Technically anything that goes through US / Five Eyes / Empire ISPs or cables are snooped and copied into massive NSA servers. Anything associated with your IP, inclusing accessing Red Note, google accounts, phone numbers ect which are attached to your Social Security Number, physical address, IRL Identification, phone contacts and meta data. Hell downloading it from the app store, google just told the US gov as well as your Internet Spy Provider.

Just assume you are known. On many lists. The US government knows. It doesn't even need a warrant. If you registered with a phone number or other social media they know. If you go to red note they know. Same with logo . Hello fedposting kirby-wave hope you're having a good day.

While Red Note / China might not give two shits or even hand data back to the NSA. The US Gov already copied it and snooped it. They also know what you visit on Red Note and assume they know what you post.

Just might be a bit harder for them to piece together cases from a foreign controlled app that won't play ball, but they didn"t need to play ball in the first place.

What they don't control is censorship of what is posted. That is in Red Note and Chinese control xicko that is why they wanted to ban TikTok.

[–] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

They also know what you visit on Red Note

Really? How?

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Your IP / MAC address / Device and meta data accessed IP and page address at aa:bb time. They can just go to the page itself or look up meta data on your device.

The data that comes back to your device or at least the locations / posts are copied too. At least locations, devices, time accessed. Your ISP spies on your traffic for the feds. The info is copied on the undersea cables going into and from the Empire as well. The mirror goes both ways. What is displayed or recieved on your device is not necessarily secret despite encryption or VPNs.

Unless you got some really good deep cover techniques just assume they know.
