Hey everyone,

I am confused as to why so many of my torrents are in rar files. My understanding is that the purpose of a rar file is compression and making a file smaller. However I download a torrent and the extracted file is the same size as the torrent download. And if I'm downloading some insanely huge Blu-ray rip, I have to wait forever for it to download and then wait forever for it to extract.

What is the point of using a rar file instead of just making the torrent with the original file? Can anyone explain this to me?

I personally have never seen this, and I've got 50+ TB of movies and shows in my collection, all from public torrents. I would definitely worry about viruses or other unwanted things being packed into an archive file. This is less of a concern on private torrents/Usenet, but I don't have much experience there so ymmv
