The Adventures of Tintin is widely regarded as a classic of comic art, but some issues are rightly criticized for racial stereotyping and a romanticized view of colonialism. This is hardly surprising, however, as the series dates back to the 1930s.

There are also several animated television series. The best known is a French-Canadian co-production with 39 half-hour episodes.

You want to really hit the Americans here. Roll back the copy right to a reasonable period. Are all Disney cartoons copyright free.

Yes, that's true. Especially in the French-speaking parts of Europe with Hergรฉ, Andrรฉ Franquin, Albert Uderzo, Moebius, Peyo, Edgar P. Jacobs, Pierre Christin, Jean-Claude Mรฉziรจres and many others.

I might post a few more to this community sometime.

I also love Benoรฎt Sokal's Inspector Canardo comics.

Thanks for sharing this. Subscribed. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

While I'm a fan of Tintin (and Asterix, Valerian, and others), I don't think "Hey, this century old European comic is good!" is sending the message that OP thinks it is.

ha, I came here to shout them out, nice!

I have heard in the internet this comic is full of racist things. How much truth is there in it?

[โ€“] 332@feddit.nu 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It is a product of its time and occasionally filled with pretty racist themes. It's also very good.

[โ€“] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago

Not that racist at all

The animated series is amazing! Good for all ages, as far as i'm concerned.

[โ€“] sfxrlz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I agree! Itโ€™s one of my all time greats. Also it aged so well.

Fun fact, Iโ€™ve got the dog tattooed on me

Edit: I especially meant the style aged well I do know about the first comics being very racist

i don't care what anyone says, i loved the 2011 movie. ๐Ÿ’—

[โ€“] cabbage@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I also loved it!

The Wikipedia article section on the proposed sequels is a wild ride, but it ends on a hopeful note:

In June 2024, Serkis stated that Jackson was working on the sequelยนโดโฐ

I never played them, but I've seen a few YouTubers play the games. They look pretty fun as well.

[โ€“] vladmech@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My local library has probably close to the full run of these so I read most all of them growing up and while they are a product of their time I have such good memories of them.

Back in my days I use to record them on VHS and watch them again when there was nothing interesting on TV (that is, 90% of the time). I finished knowing by heart any single lines if dialogs. Yeah, I was that weirdo creep at school.

Except for "Les cigares du pharaon", where I didn't record the good channel ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ. I passed my whole childhood with that hole in the story.

Yes! Grew up watching this show. So so good.

[โ€“] toynbee@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There was a show?!

edit: Actually read the post. TIL there was a show. Nice.

You used the wrong accent, it's Hergรฉ.

France and Belgium have a huge comics culture, with often cross border collaborations. An illustration of this is the prestigious Angoulรชme comics festival https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angoul%C3%AAme_International_Comics_Festival.

For those who like SF and heard about the legendary Dune movie adaption by Jodorowsky and designed by Giraud (aka Mล“bius) that never happened, but fed the next following generation of SF classics (Blade Runner, Alien, The Fifth Element), I recommend the Incal by the same two guys, based on material and concepts from the movie.

[โ€“] DandomRude@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"รฉ" corrected - thanks.

Regarding Dune: The documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune" about the production of this probably most influential movie that was never made is well worth watching.

And yes; There are a lot of great comic artists especially from France and Belgium. When it comes to sci-fi I also like Valรฉrian and Laureline among many.

Pretty sure every American brand is considering their position. That includes mighty disney.
