I'm pretty sure Sméagol is just a translation of the "real" name (Trahald or something IIRC), but I dunno if it's an actual name

Smeagol sounds like a pretty genderless name.

Why not Gandalf? Smeagol was such a dreadful personality after he'd posessed the One Ring....
