If you’re seriously wondering, Bikini Bottom is the name of the city that SpongeBob SquarePants lives in, in the Nickelodeon TV show. The original sub on Reddit was for sharing Twitter screenshots that used templates from the show. So any meme that was about SpongeBob was shared there and this community was created as the equivalent on Lemmy.
Why the TV show named it that…probably because “bikini” is a funny word for kids and also with a slight taboo feel for kids.
There is also an area called the bikini atoll where a lot of nuclear testing was done so the water underneath it could be called bikini bottom
