Geography is just physics slowed down, with a couple of trees stuck in it. - Terry Pratchett

Notice Board

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time. Read more...

Planned for 400.000 people? Third largest city in California?

400k isn't even much in European standards. I don't get that claim.

Per the article it's the "third largest by land area."

It might be by size and not by population, as there are several cities in California that surpass 400k people

Yea, I'm pretty sure I've heard of San Diego being referred to as California's 3rd largest city.

[–] ares35@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

definitely by area. it's "larger" than san jose, but with a million fewer people.

We used to go camping in the California City desert all the time. It is super weird seeing cul-de-sacs and street signs with nothing but dirt.

I don’t think this empty stretch of land would qualify as a city in any sensible definition. But sure third largest.

[–] PatFussy@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago

Its not third largest because its empty land, otherwise other neighboring cities like tehachapi and Tejon ranch would have it beat. They call it thurd largest because they have designated streets with names that have nobody living on it.

I drove through once to check it out.

It’s a weird-ass place. Like someone took a small desert town and stretched it over miles of empty scrubland.

Very interesting article. Cheap land, sure. But, how's the fishing?
