Welcome to c/sociology!

Sociology is a social science that focuses on society, human social behavior, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life. In simple words sociology is the scientific study of society. It uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order and social change. While some sociologists conduct research that may be applied directly to social policy and welfare, others focus primarily on refining the theoretical understanding of social processes and phenomenological method. Subject matter can range from micro-level analyses of society (i.e. of individual interaction and agency) to macro-level analyses (i.e. of social systems and social structure). Read more...

I’ve read that abstract like three times and I still can’t tell whether the authors claim having communities divided between largely immigrant and largely non-immigrant makes crime go down, or if it’s vice versa.

Super interesting. In initial reading it seemed at fist like you might have misinterpreted the study but it does seem like they're saying it's been well established that immigrantion lowers neighbour violent crime (though I'm not sure exactly what that does or doesn't include)

And it seems like a lot of this paper is more specifically about how opportunity for meaningful political engagement, or self representation augments that decrease in violent crime. Without reading the whole thing I can't tell how much they focus on the general relationship between immigration and violent crime, or crime in general
