Good choice Piefed and Blahaj go good together!
WomensStuff
Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.
Rules…
- Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
- Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
- Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
- No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
- New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.
Yep it's a winning combination
I wonder if a bot comment in each post reminding people this is a safe space for women only (trans/nb inclusive) might help cool down any resentment or harassment from men? I don't know if piefed has the ability to sticky comments like reddit, but at these communities are still small enough that a comment won't get drowned
Edit: I guess this might be hindered a bit because plenty of people block bots
That's not a bad idea! We've found that even big warnings in posts about that don't deter the bad ones. They just want to attack us, and they know it's against the rules
Maybe a bot could even do the part of the moderators and DM a member when they first comment or post. Allowing the user to respond to the bot to confirm if they fit the community and if not then remove the comment/post. A big ask I know but it may be an option if automation is on the table.
It's worth looking into thanks for the idea!
I have absolutely no idea what piefed is, even though the blahaj community has posted a lot about it recently. I'm just glad I can still access this community from the same app.
This is a really positive change. Moving to blahaj will hopefully make a significant impact on the concerns raised recently in this community. I'm glad that you guys have been proactive about protecting this community and have also been vocal about concerns that this community has raised.
Ada is amazing I'd like to also thank her for facilitating this move and also generally for being such a positive influence in so many communities.
I do have a few questions.
In light of the concerns raised, do you have anything else planned to overcome these challenges?
While I see the removal of downvotes as generally a good thing, are there any other means by which the community can self moderate besides reporting posts or comments that go against the overall mission of this community?
Are you, or would you, consider(ing) changing the community from blacklist to whitelist? Like blahaj is overall with their sign up applications. I'm not advocating for this I'm just curious if this is something that's been considered.
Finally, if Lemmy grows significantly how do you plan to handle the impact that this will have on the community? If we are already having issues with external influences I only see that becoming worse if Lemmy were to see an increase in membership.
Edit:
I don't know if it's possible but some communities on Reddit had an account age limit to prevent spam, harassment, and also to ensure active moderation had a long-term effect. Is this something we could implement here?
Thanks sweetgem, and welcome, we're really glad you're here. I'm not quite sure what some of your questions mean. When you say the concerns raised, what concerns exactly do you mean? Reporting is fine for anything against the rules, or people can comment if they have a different perspective on the post. We do warn people that new accounts may be removed and we take that on a case by case basis. Blacklist we may consider in the future.
In terms of lemmy growing it depends how it grows. Right now we can't predict it, so we'll just have to see.
Sorry, I wasn't exactly clear. I'm mostly just curious if you have further plans alongside the move to blahaj to address the issue you raised in this post.
I saw the post in the old community that talked extensively about the issue of outside influence and open hostility to members within the community which are the concerns I'm referring to.
Regarding Lemmy growing, what would be the response to the issue getting worse? Are there any plans for if that happens?
Ah thanks mate. We do a lot behind the scenes to protect members but we don't talk about it publically so people don't know how to circumvent it. I'm confident in Ada and before we moved I asked her how she could protect us, she's really proactive and prevents a lot of issues. We will always get them slipping in sometimes, but they only get to do that once and they're banned. Dandelion is outstanding at spotting bad ones and we're both ruthless with banning. I think that's evidenced by how they hassle me outside... they can't get our community anymore so they have to be shitty with me.
With growing, we'll just have to see how it goes. We don't have concrete plans cos we don't know what the future holds
Understood. I appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. You guys are doing an amazing job. <3
Thanks sweetgem I appreciate it
