If you made menswear with no pockets, you'd have a bunch of inventory nobody is buying. I buy pants primarily based on how big the pockets are, it's like an evolutionary process, except for pants pockets.

When I was looking for a suit for a wedding (never in my life owned a suit so had no idea that they are expensive) it became apparent that good suit from a shop costs same-ish with custom-made (also pre-made ones need to be adjusted so you need to go to sewing atelier anyway).
There were definitely times that were much worse.
Also doesn't help that "the middle ages" covers a 1000 year span of time with a lot of technological, political, societal and economical changes.
