Attention moderators and admins! Risk of "zombie" communities on remote instances (and how to avoid) (sh.itjust.works)

When the server closes, the communities will stay visible on other servers, but any new content posted to them won't federate to other servers. However, users on remote instances do not receive any indication of this.

As a result, lemm.ee communities will live on in a sort of "undead" state. (Example: https://sh.itjust.works/c/bertstrips@feddit.de (feddit.de shut down about a year ago))

To address this, I would recommend the following actions:

Set each community to "only moderators can post"
Include a link to wherever community decides to move to in a pinned thread and the sidebar of each community.
Prepend the string "[Retired]" or "[Closed]" to the start of the display name of each community. This way, for interfaces where the name may be truncated due to length, it will still be obvious that the community is closed. Additionally, community names starting with “[” will appear in a separate section of an alphabetized list, setting them apart from the rest of the communities.

These steps will inform anyone who comes across the communities after the server closes on what the situation is and prevent them from inadvertently posting to a "dead community".

Good idea, I went to lemm.ee by accident and got bit. I’ve been hiding the bite from other communities by having long sleeves.

Great point, I would also recommend locking all existing posts before lemm.ee is shutdown

So that means if users want to post something, they should beg a mod to post it? Long live censorship! Fediverse The "censorship-free" decentralized network... Where the mods themselves are the biggest problem... Especially direct permabans which of course is (not) in line with the basic idea of fediverse.

Well, at least I'm not deleting it and giving people a reason to downvote.

Whereby from "Long live censorship" onwards it was no longer explicitly related to OP but to fediverse. I still hold this opinion that fediverse suffers extremely from censorship and mods who simply act unfairly.

Not really understand the point you are trying to make. This post is about communities on dead instances. Dead as in the host has stopped hosting it. Those communities will not ever federate again. So if you post in such a community from your own instance, it will not federate to other servers. It also causes issues with moderation.

Most of the communities on those dead instances have moved to other instances. And people should use those instead of trying to use the dead instance community.

I had mistranslated something, which made me think that the points were not related to dead communities but as a preventative measure for active communities. That was a pretty gross mistake in my thinking.
