Our Rules:

  1. Keep it civil. We're all people here. Be respectful to one another.

  2. No sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia or any other flavor of bigotry. I should not need to explain this one.

  3. Must be tumblr related. This one is kind of a given.

  4. Try not to repost anything posted within the past month. Beyond that, go for it. Not everyone is on every site all the time.

  5. No unnecessary negativity. Just because you don't like a thing doesn't mean that you need to spend the entire comment section complaining about said thing. Just downvote and move on.

USS Independence was right, this IS the most beautiful ship in the world.

Its sister ship was given to the USSR as war reparation and they let it rot for a while, later converted it to carry timber and then it caught fire

What a waste.

This pic adds SO much context for size to the OP image, I love it.

Yup, that ship could get it anytime.

Here's an archive of Wikipedia's cited source for the story.

I kind of feel like a US ship is a bit biased towards ships named after the country/continent's own namesake, but it is impressive. It was launched in 1931, but it's modelled after ships of the line from the late 1700s.

Following a not wholly dissimilar idea, there is also German training ship Gorch Fock.

German training ship Gorch Fock, a sail barque, with sails set

Thing is, the Amerigo is huge, you wouldn't tell from the pictures, it's got over 2 times the displacement of the Gorch Fock

Huh, I did not know that. Neat.
